How to Clear Your Car Through Customs After Shipping: Tips & Guidance

Buying a car from the U.S. is just the beginning. Once your vehicle arrives in your destination country, customs clearance is the final — and often most overlooked — step before it’s officially yours. Here’s how to get it done smoothly, avoid delays, and stay compliant.
Before your car even ships, make sure you or your customs broker have the following:
-
Original Bill of Lading (BOL) – proof of shipment.
-
Commercial Invoice or Auction Bill of Sale – shows purchase price and seller details.
-
Export Certificate or Title – proof of ownership.
-
Packing list (if containerized) – contents of the container.
-
Photo ID or passport – for private buyers.
-
Import permit (if required in your country).
???? Tip: Some countries require translated or certified versions of these documents.
Each country has its own laws on importing vehicles. Check for:
-
Age restrictions (e.g. no older than 5 years).
-
Emission or safety standards.
-
Prohibited vehicle types (e.g. salvaged titles).
-
Whether RORO and container methods are treated differently.
✅ Example: In Georgia, cars older than 10 years are taxed differently. In Ukraine, customs duties vary by engine size and year.
Be prepared to pay the following (varies by country):
-
Import Duty
-
Value Added Tax (VAT) or Sales Tax
-
Excise tax or environmental fees
-
Customs broker fees
Some countries allow temporary import or duty exemptions if you're moving there or importing for personal use. Always verify before shipment.
You usually have two options:
Option A: Hire a Licensed Customs Broker
-
They handle the paperwork, fees, and inspection scheduling.
-
Recommended if you’re importing for the first time.
Option B: Self-Clear Your Car
-
Visit the customs office yourself with your documents.
-
Pay all duties directly.
-
Schedule inspection if required.
⏱️ Important: You typically have 5–10 days after the container arrives before storage fees apply at the port.
Once your car is cleared:
-
Pick it up from the port or bonded warehouse.
-
Register it in your local DMV or vehicle authority.
-
Insure it if required before driving.
-
If containerized, make sure no extra parts or items are left behind.
